Jochen Schmid is a Full Professor of Microbiology and Biotechnology at the University of Münster, Germany, and serves as Managing Director of the Institute of Molecular Microbiology and Biotechnology, which also hosts the biotechnological pilot plant. He studied Biotechnology at Technische Universität Berlin, where he also earned his PhD in Genetics on fungal polysaccharide production. He subsequently led a research group on microbial polysaccharides and metabolic engineering at the Technical University of Munich and later became an Associate Professor at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) in Trondheim, focusing on biopolymers and biomaterials. His research centers on sustainable biotechnological production processes, with a particular emphasis on microbial polysaccharides and their chemical modification through synthetic biology approaches. He has published more than 75 peer-reviewed articles and book chapters and has presented his work at numerous national and international conferences. In addition, he is the founder of the spin-off company CASCAT GmbH, which develops technologies for biobased products derived from carbohydrates using enzymatic cascade reactions.
